2021 Chicago Prize: James R. Thompson Center
Ink and Colored Pencil, 2021
Competition Brief
The architecture of Chicago is defined by its many layers of innovative architecture that have occurred throughout its history--the preservation, rethinking, repurposing and renewal of its most important buildings is critical to carry on the city’s long-standing reputation as a center of architectural innovation.  This design competition asked participants to re-imagine what the Thompson Center could be given a new life with a new purpose.
Project Description
This competition entry builds upon Helmut Jahn’s legacy in Chicago and revisits a competition Jahn lost in the Harold Washington Library Center located on South State Street. Some of Jahn’s design concepts from his earlier designs for the library are brought to this concept including a bridge over the elevated rail and the extension of open atrium spaces. Relocating the Chicago Public Library Center to the Thompson Center will preserve the building’s atrium space and transform this iconic structure into a public indoor square for all seasons. The addition of a mixed-use tower represents an open book and is a beacon on the Chicago skyline.
